Featured Artist: Monica Abad
Mónica Abad García, began her studies in Fine Arts at the University of Salamanca and graduated with her Masters degree from the University of the Basque Country in 1996. She continued her formal artistic training at BilbaoArte, the contemporary art center of the Bilbao City Council, where she took a series of courses exploring various artistic techniques. Since 1996 she has participated in various individual and collective exhibitions, among which, that have taken place in the Ateneo in Madrid, the Sala Larrea in Bilbao, and at the Bilbao Sondika airport.
In 2004, she founded her own studio and creative workshop called, “de Nieve y de Candelas”. In doing so, and without abandoning other lines of her on-going work, she began to concentrate on everyday objects as artistic interpretations. Working with new and reclaimed items, from furniture and lamps to upholstery and walls, she began using acrylic techniques, handmade screen printing, collage, etc., with the idea of wrapping the objects around us in a delicate layer of beauty. Her informal way of bringing more art into our everyday lived spaces.
In 2011, Monica moved her studio and creative workshop to Sóller, Mallorca where she continues to work to this day. Since arriving to Mallorca, she has participated in various temporary exhibitions and currently has her work displayed at both hotels and restaurants throughout the island. She is also the co-owner of a Slow Food Cafe in Sóller called, “Miga de Nube” where she exhibits and sells her work.
For this current exhibition, she will be showcasing some of her most recent works that also happen to be some of her most personal work to date. Her chosen surface on this occasion is the traditional canvas on which she has created a series of invented landscapes, that live intuited through the texts and colors, which are far from our reality. Intimate feelings expressed through abstraction and graphics.
